Good Sound by the Numbers

The study of sound is interesting, because there are so many different answers to the question “What is good audio reproduction?” While some people prefer the absolute accuracy of a digital reproduction system, others prefer the warmth and character of vinyl recordings. Low-noise digital amplifiers are available, yet some prefer sound of fifty year old vacuum tube amplifiers. Even if a standard of audio reproduction could be agreed upon, each individual hears or perceives sound differently than everyone else. Even the room in which the sound is played has a strong impact upon the final result.
Engineers are used to hard facts and numbers. When they go shopping for an audio system, they often look at the specification sheets and compare the numbers. The facts are the facts, after all. One engineer, Dr. Amar Bose, often tells the story of how this strategy worked, or rather didn’t work, for him when he set out to buy his first real audio system. He says that after completed his engineering degree, he decided to reward himself with a good audio system. Being fresh out of engineering school, he compared the specifications of every brand he could find. Stated frequency responses, distortion levels, and every number that every company manufacturing audio equipment published.
Finally, he chose the audio equipment with the very best specifications and expected that he had the best available system. So confident was he that he decided to invite his friends and relatives to hear the system when he fired it up. He put on one of his favorite classical recordings, and the music began. He says it sounded horrific. The violins were screechy, bass disappeared, the music sounded flat and lifeless. In short, the stated specification had no bearing on the actual performance. As an engineer, he felt betrayed.
It turns out that each company uses different methods and different standards to make their measurements. Objective measurement of almost any piece of audio equipment will produce different results than those stated by the manufacturer, some worse than others. Dr. Bose vowed that he would not play that game with consumers, nor would he try to compete with the false numbers being put out by others. To this day, he refuses to publish detailed specification numbers for the audio equipment his company produces. Instead, he invites customers to simply listen and decide whether they like it or not.
That is really the best way to choose audio equipment. Listen to the equipment in your own home in the room where it will be kept. The numbers on a sheet of paper don’t matter, what matters is whether you, as the customer, enjoy the sound you are hearing. Bear in mind, though, that to give the audio equipment a fighting chance, you may need to prepare the room. The walls and configuration of the room actually changes the way sound reaches the ear of the listener no matter how accurately the audio equipment reproduces it. A bad room can ruin a good systems. Most room acoustics can be corrected with the use of room acoustic treatments, however. Bass traps can knock down excessive bass reverberations within the room. Acoustically absorptive wall panels can soften the harsh treble reinforcement that can occur as primary reflection bounce straight to the listener’s position.
Good audio reproduction is not about numbers, it is about the personal experience of listening to music in the comfort of your home.
How the WWW has change shoe buying

The United States has approximately 72.3% Internet penetration; this means that over 72 percent of the entire population of the United States is using the Internet. With such a high volume of people surfing the net and browsing the World Wide Web, it should come as no surprise that the Internet is changing the way people do things. When the Internet as we know it today was created, it was envisioned as being a place where people in all corners of the world could share and retrieve information. But it has evolved into so much more than just information sharing. The World Wide Web has essentially caused the world as we know it to shrink. The world is available to us at the touch of a button in a way that it never has been before. With all of the technology and innovation surrounding the Internet, it is no wonder that it has changed how we live even down to the way we shop.
It has been reported that 19% of Internet users shop online at least once a week, and that percentage is not going to go anywhere but up. Online retailers have really stepped up to the challenge of providing personal style service at a distance. If you were to tell me ten years ago that one day I would be buying shoes online, I would have laughed. But here I am today, a frequent online shopper… even for shoes! You have to try on shoes. Pick them up and feel them. See how the brand fits and if they pinch your toes or make your ankles look fat.
So how do you accomplish all of that online? Online shoe stores have pushed online shopping innovation to the next level. Most competitive online shoe retailers have free shipping and free return shipping. If the shoe does not fit, simply return it for a refund or exchange and never leave the comfort of your own home.
Customer reviews are another way online shoe retailers have made seemingly difficult task of shoe buying without trying on rather easy. As customers rate and review their purchases, an extensive library of information becomes available to consumers. When we are shopping for shoes online, we can see how they measure up according to other consumers. You can see how other people thought they fit compared to the size and width, if they felt comfortable, or if there were any really good features or some not-so-great qualities.
Buying shoes online is just one simple example of how the Internet has changed the way we live our lives. Online retailers have really started thinking outside of the box to bring consumers easy and convenient shopping experiences that most of us probably would never have thought would be possible. Specialty retailers can reach a much larger audience online as opposed to a standard brick-an-mortar store front, and with an easy search of the World Wide Web, millions of people can have easy access to a wide variety of online retailers just waiting to serve them.

There’s an old saying that says you can’t put the cork back in the bottle, meaning that once you’ve passed the point of no return and you might as well finish the bottle. That’s because once wine is opened it starts to mix with the air and the taste gets progressively worse over time. The cork also tends to swell up once removed so it can’t be replaced without great effort if it will fit all. Fortunately, modern day makers of wine accessories are very clever about these things, and although you may not be able to put the cork back in the bottle, there are now plenty of other solutions to this age old problem.
The most simple of these is the use of a simple wine stopper. A wine stopper is simply a cork that is tapered so that the bottom end fits in the neck of the wine bottle easily and as it slides down into the bottle, the widening top end fills the opening securely. Wine stoppers have a handle or grip on top to make them easy to remove again. Often, the top is decorated with a holiday theme or some other motif that helps to set the mood or add a fun touch.
Wine stoppers work as well as would putting the cork back in the bottle if that were possible. However, even with that done, the empty portion of the bottle is filled with fresh air that can still be absorbed into the wine and ruin its flavor in short order. To solve this problem, there are special wine stoppers with air valves built into them. A small pump is attached to the valve after this special stopper is inserted into the wine bottle. The pump pulls out most of the air leaving a partial vacuum inside the bottle. If there’s no air inside, then the wine stays as fresh as it was when it was resealed for days.
Next is an entirely different approach. Instead of resealing the bottle, the problem can be attacked at its root. By preventing air from coming into contact with the wine, the top seal becomes irrelevant. To do this, a small cylinder of a heavier than air, inert gas is used. The gas is released into the bottle where it settles down to form a barrier between the air and the wine. Since the gas used does not get absorbed into the wine and prevents contact with the air, the wine’s taste stays fresh. A stopper can still be used to prevent the gas from being pulled from the bottle or roiled up by a strong draft, but the stopper need not be very tight or form a complete seal.
Despite the old saying, modern wine accessories have ruined a perfectly good excuse to pour another glass and finish off the bottle.
A Gift of a Leather Briefcase to Mark a Milestone in Independence

As our children grow up, there are certain events that mark new stages of maturity in their lives. Taking their first steps, going to school, graduating from high school, going off to college, graduating college, entering the workforce, getting married, and having children are some of the major ones. Entering the workforce is the one that really marks their independence from us as parents.
For events like this it is customary to give them gift that shows both that we are proud of their accomplishment and confident in their success in their current endeavor. Depending upon their new profession as they enter the workplace, a good quality leather briefcase is both a fitting symbol and a practical gift to commemorate this big step.
A leather briefcase is something that most young professionals would like to have, but which may be considered an extravagance when they are allocating their first paychecks. Left to their own devices, they may choose something cheaper that serves its purpose for a while, but which doesn’t carry the prestige of high quality leather briefcases.
A cheaper vinyl briefcase will hold the documents and paraphernalia required for the job, but it looks cheap and connotes a certain level of employee, entry level. It screams inexperienced rookie. Fortunately, these vinyl briefcases often don’t hold together for very long before they need to be replaced. That’s a second chance to it right and buy a leather briefcase.
Leather briefcases are made to last for many, many years. They look sophisticated and stylish and they impart that appearance upon those who carry them as well. They are a bit more expensive, but when you pro-rate that cost over the lifetime of the briefcase against the number of times you’d have to replace a cheaper business case during the same period, it’s actually a bargain. Leather briefcases are generally better designed than cheaper cases as well. Cheaper cases may have a holder for a couple of pens, and perhaps a partition to separate a second set of documents, but often, that’s about it. Leather cases are designed for the long term and to meet the needs of the successful business person. They’ll have pockets, pouches and dividers to handle business cards, a calculator, writing instruments, various document packages, and depending upon the model selected, perhaps even a laptop computer and cord. A good leather briefcase will have secure, dedicated areas for just about everything you need to work at the office or on the road, everything except a steaming hot cup of coffee, that is.
If you’re planning on giving a gift to someone to celebrate them entering the world of the working, then a good quality leather briefcase is a great choice that gives them a good start in their new career. It will certainly be well-appreciated.

What a household name! The Canadian-based giant Motorola is well-known for its advancements and creativity in the telecommunication field. It’s pretty fair and accurate to say that they are the founding father of telecommunication. They began their climb to superiority with the first portable 2-way radio device and then in 1983 came the portable cellular phone. They have the self-proclaimed title of the “Pioneer of Radio Communication” in producing portable radios. After that came the radio phone for cars, from which cellular phones eventually sprouted and the world hasn’t been the same since.
Amongst the many models available in the cell phone industry, Motorola mobile phones are remarkably sleek; they are the lightest mobile devices in the cell phone industry. The wide array of models includes the Motorola i580 equipped with a 2-way radio digital player, the Motorola Krzr K1m, the famous Motorola Razr2V9m, Motorola V3Razr, Motorola C381p and the list goes on. The latest model to hit the market is the Motorola L6i, which is equipped with an impressive digital camera, Bluetooth, MP3 capabilities and other fine features as well. One of things that makes Motorola so well-accepted and liked is that their phones are state-of-the-art competitive and are priced at affordable rates, including such popular models as the Motorola KRZR, ROKR E6 and the Motorola w215 and w220.
Although impressive as they come in the box, accessories for these phones are always in high demand. Accessories must be selected with care due to the variation among models. For instance, Motorola chargers come in three different types. Motorola is known to use 2.5mm headset jacks but they make universal ear-bud plugs which are compatible with other company brands as well. Motorola batteries enable extended talk-time as well as standby time. Motorola recommends that you use only their brand of accessories for the optimal performance and support from your device. By using Motorola accessories, it enhances the function of your Motorola mobile phone.
Motorola phones are arguably the cheapest and most durable phones on the market. This is pretty amazing considering that Motorola mobile phones offer all sorts of innovative features, such as customizable ringtones and graphics. Motorola phones are available in the flip or slide versions; they also make Smartphone’s. The standard and regular styles come with batteries, adaptors, chargers, Bluetooth capabilities and headsets all manufactured by Motorola. Motorola phones offer an enormous list of exclusive features that have become a fan favorite for customers, clients and users everywhere. For the best buys on Motorola products, go online where you will find a huge selection at very reasonable prices.
Wherever you go in the world, you are likely to see the Motorola brand of products. Their logo is plastered on windows of grey market businesses, online websites and various other types of businesses all over the world. Whenever cell phones are discussed amongst teens, adults and business people alike, you are guaranteed to hear the name Motorola somewhere in the conversation.
Motorola is a pioneer of telecommunication and there’s not a mobile phone company or telecommunication business in the world that would ever dispute that Motorola is well deserving of that status.
Tramadol Safe Treatment

Patients beginning a treatment need reliable information to feel safe and to keep optimistic. Their General Practitioner (GP) will be in charge of providing this comfort and security to the patient. GPs should provide their patients with the necessary details on prescription Tramadol, its manufacturers, how it works, dosages, treatment duration, side effects, food interaction and storage instructions. This provides the patient with a feeling of power over themselves and their situation, allowing a comfort zone in which they can relax.
Founded in the 1940’s, Grünenthal GmbH designed Tramadol and released it in 1977. Grünenthal has always been known for focusing their energy and resources into developing stronger, safer analgesics, gynecological formulations and substance delivery. Grünenthal is committed to their patients’ health and happiness. They can be considered a guarantee of reliability and excellent manufacturing as they’re always looking to better what they have already found and strive to better what they have found.
What is Tramadol? It’s a drug substance used to manufacture a few brand name medications meant to treat moderate to chronic pain. However, Tramadol is not just a pain killer, no; it’s also used in the role of a central acting analgesic. In fact, it may end up being a low dose alternative to Morphine and an all together substitute for NSAIDS.
Tramadol is available in different forms. It comes as extended release tablets, immediate release tablets, solution for injections and suppositories. There’s hope that the latest formulations will provide patients with a single dose dispensation.
Just as with any other prescription medication, your General Practitioner (GP) will play a vital role in your secure treatment. You’ll want to follow the advice of your GP to avoid side effects, overdose, dependency and abuse. Patients who are properly monitored can more easily avoid the common side effects of vomiting, nausea and sweating.
Unfortunately, like with other medications, Tramadol is not right for everyone. A patient who may possibly not have found relief through non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or narcotic painkillers may uncover Tramadol as a medicinal tool to provide relief for their pain. However, caution should be given when Tramadol is co-administered with drugs such as Cimitidine, Warfarin, Digoxin, MAO Inhibitors, Carbamazepina, CYP2D6 Inhibitors and Guinidine. In addition, patients with risk of respiratory depression or who suffer from intracranial pressure or acute abdominal conditions should be monitored closely by family and their GP.
While Grünenthal advertises Tramadol as a low risk abuse drug, the fact is abuse and dependency can happen. You’ll want to look into your medical history and discuss it with your GP if you find or know:
Epilepsy or seizures in your family history.
You’ve ever had a head injury.
A metabolic disease.
You’re under treatment with any other medication.
You have a history of drug or alcohol abuse or withdrawal.
Pain medication is designed to assist and to cure if taken properly and the guidance of your GP is followed. Make sure to discuss your medical history with your GP and you’ll probably find that they’re not hazardous in most situations. Medical Science is here to serve and to protect, with dedication to people internationally. When you are in pain and visit your GP, you may find that Tramadol, Ultram, Fioricet or Ultracet are effective pain relievers for your symptoms. Speak to your GP to ensure that you can live as pain-free of a life as possible. When your GP prescribes Tramadol, you can go to an online pharmacy to purchase cheap Tramadol.
In the Market for an Engagement Ring? Relax!

Engagement rings; those two words can make many women delirious with happiness but cause many men to break out into a cold sweat. In fact, some guys find themselves at a loss when buying any type of jewelry, even something as standard as diamond stud earrings, pearl necklaces or even diamond bracelets. If you’re one of those guys, then rest assured that help is available. If you don’t know the difference between solitaire diamond rings, vintage engagement rings and pre set engagement rings, you’re about to get a crash course on the subject. So sit down and relax.
First of all, do your research. Yes, you can look for cheap engagement rings online. But you can also go to a jeweler and pick their brains while also looking over mens watches, such as Bulova watches, for yourself. Sometimes talking to a real live person about such a large purchase is the way to go. For other men, that isn’t necessarily so. One of the most important things you can do is to find out the size of your girlfriend’s ring finger. After that, you should determine the size of diamond that you want. Determining the type of metal that you want is important as well.
Diamond sizes are set in carats. There are many variations in sizes, such as one carat, 1/2 carat, 1/4 carat, 1/3 carat….the list goes on and on. And bigger doesn’t always mean better. Sometimes a smaller diamond that has a more brilliant shine is worth more than a larger diamond that has some flaws and may not shine as brightly. Of course, some women simply like big diamonds and there is no getting around that fact. Even if you’re diamond hunting on a strict budget, you can usually find the perfect diamond.
Cut and clarity both play a huge part in choosing diamonds. The cut of the diamond is what actually shows the light and how it reflects off of the inner and outer surfaces. A diamond’s clarity is measured by how many inclusions or flaws that it has. Some of these flaws can’t be seen by the naked eye, only through a jeweler’s loupe. However, it is still a good idea to pay attention to the clarity, because if a diamond has certain flaws, then certain settings, such as tension settings, are generally not a good idea.
Another important aspect is the type of metal that you want the diamond set in. Do you like traditional looking rings, or more importantly, does your bride-to-be? If so, yellow gold is usually a common option. Some people like the look of platinum but don’t have the budget for it. This is where the white gold option comes in handy. It has the look of platinum, but at a much lower price. However, if your beloved has sensitive skin or an allergy to certain metals such as silver or copper, then you are better off going with a metal such as platinum. It is hypoallergenic, which means that it won’t irritate the skin or cause a rash on her finger. That’s a good thing, right? Above all, just relax when you’re looking at engagement rings. Save your nervous energy for when you really need it – when you’re about to actually pop the question!
Bonding Dolls – Teething
The first moments after the birth of your baby are wonderful for bonding with your newborn. Newborn infants are very alert during this first hour and are instinctively looking for food. Studies have been done where an infant is placed on Mother’s stomach immediately after birth. They then make their own way to the breast for their first meal.
Bonding Dolls Although much of the bonding process is instinctive and will happen naturally, it does not always happen immediately. When I was pregnant with my first child, I never felt that close bond I had heard about while I was carrying my daughter. It wasn’t until after she was born, and I got to hold her and kiss her that the bond began to form.
One thing is for sure, once the bond is there, it is impossible to break. The tie between mother and child is perhaps the strongest in existence between two people. So when it is time to separate from your child it can be extremely difficult for both of you.
Probably the first instance of necessary separation of mother and baby occurs when baby is ready to sleep alone. Giving the baby a bottle or pacifier can cause problems with tooth decay – not to mention the issue of milk leaking into the crib or spoiling during the night. If your baby has been used to sleeping next to you, then your smell is a significant factor in their comfort level. Consider using a bonding doll or toy instead of a bottle or pacifier for baby’s first night alone.
Ookie® Dolls make a wonderful bonding toy. Babies love the soft touch of the cotton flannel body and silky satin trim. The knotted hands are easy for baby to grip. Moms like them because they are lightweight and machine washable.
Cuddle the doll between you and your baby for a few nights before making the transition to the crib. This will give the doll the same scent as you and will cause the baby to associate the doll with comfort.
I used a plush bunny as a bonding toy for my youngest daughter. I started placing the bunny in her crib with her from the very first day. She is now almost 2 years old, and still adores her bunny. The most difficult part is getting it away from her to throw into the washing machine once in awhile!
There will be many more times in life when you will have to separate from your children. I also have a daughter that will be graduating from High School in a few months and moving out on her own. I don’t think this event will be any easier then it was when I placed her in her crib to sleep by herself for the first time when she was a few months old.

Home School or Not to Homeschool… That Is the Question

There’s no doubt that many private and public schools do an absolutely terrific job at providing quality education. Even so, home schooling is becoming more and more popular with parents-and for good reasons.
Home School One of the main benefits of home schooling is pace. In the traditional systems, teachers often are forced to set the pace of learning not by the student, but by the students. A teacher will teach according to how long it takes for the majority of the class to comprehend a task or subject. This means that a special needs student who may need extra time or attention may not receive it despite the best intentions of the teacher. Likewise, especially gifted students may find themselves bored to tears and may not be able to progress as fast as they might if they were being instructed individually. With home schooling, a child’s curriculum can be adjusted to the child’s individual needs and interests.
A second benefit of home schooling is that it can be effectively applied even when a family moves a lot. Thus, home schooling may be the answer for parents who have jobs that require frequent travel. Parents are more actively involved in their child’s learning and get to spend more time with their child.
Third, technology has made home schooling incredibly easy, not to mention affordable. Parents who want to home school their children are only a mouse click away from a plethora of activities, lesson plans, and subject tests. Not only that, but there’s a multitude of various software and other tools that the kids themselves can use in order to learn. Another great benefit of the technology is that parents can do their own research to find the right materials for their child-the child doesn’t have to use a textbook of which the parents might not necessarily even approve or that doesn’t fit the needs of the child.
So what about the notions that home-schooled children are more socially inept, or that they fall behind their privately/publicly-schooled counterparts? Apparently, that may be all they are-notions. Research has shown that, contrary to popular belief, home-schooled kids consistently outperform students who go through the traditional systems-the out-performance isn’t just by a few points, either. One research study found that home-schooled kids out-performed those who go through the traditional system by up to 30 percent across the board! Not only that, home-schooled kids have been shown to be more involved in their community and to be happier later in life.
Home schooling isn’t for everyone (home schooling means that one parent must stay home, which affects family income, for example), and it’s important to realize that each state has its own set of requirements regarding home schooling. Nevertheless, home schooling does have some tangible benefits. The number of home-schooled children thus has risen significantly over the past few years. Currently, over a million children are classified as home-schooled in the United States, proving that although home schooling may not be the option, it is an option that parents can choose.

From Reporting to Business Intelligence
The Evolution of Business Intelligence

Of all the elements that can help HR deliver ’strategic value’ to an organisation, business intelligence ranks at or near the top of the list. If you accept that your workforce is one of your organisation’s biggest assets, the ability to provide senior management with meaningful information about the best way to leverage it has to be a priority. Whether you’re calculating costs, analysing individual employee value, digging into the factors behind absence or assessing the best way to recruit and retain high-performers, HR business intelligence is critical.
Yet for all its obvious value, many HR functions still struggle to provide deep-level business insight. In some respects, this is simply the continuation of historical trends. While the finance function has a long analytical pedigree centred on revenue and cost, HR’s role has traditionally been focused on meeting regulatory requirements, administering people-related processes and providing counsel. From a business intelligence perspective, its role until comparatively recently was largely confined to managing overhead and providing rudimentary insight into operational efficiency, with only the most basic means of measuring people-related value. As a result, while some high-performing HR functions now provide sophisticated business intelligence, a large number of organisations lack both the tools and the analytical skills needed to provide business insight.
This emphasis is reflected in the way organisations approach HRIT projects, which still tend to be heavily focused on automation rather than business intelligence. The priority for most projects is to improve the management of HR processes and transactions, whether that’s replacing a core HR Management System or automating processes such as recruitment or absence management. The business intelligence components tend to be limited to setting up standard reports and occasionally building a custom report to meet specific senior management needs, with more sophisticated analysis pushed back into a future ‘Phase Two’.
There’s nothing wrong with focusing first on automating people-intensive manual processes, particularly as they typically deliver the efficiencies you need to make a business case for HRIT investment. And it’s perfectly reasonable to automate before you analyse: there’s little point trying to dig down into the underlying causes of absence, for example, if you don’t have a mechanism in place to capture data about which employees are actually sick, on vacation or taking maternity leave. But what tends to happen is that the more advanced business intelligence components – the ‘Phase Two’ – never quite happen.
Ideally, process improvements and business intelligence should go hand-in-hand – the implementation can be phased, but they need to be seen as two parts of the same project. This is partly a question of good practice: you need to have insight into how efficiently automated processes are running, which requires some kind of analytical capability. Just as important, as we outline in Part Two, easy access to relevant data is what paves the way for more effective business intelligence – and automating processes helps organisations shift data from paper forms, standalone spreadsheets and disparate software applications into a central database where it can be more readily analysed.
This close inter-relationship is reflected in the way that software developers bundle business intelligence software in with the transactional and process management capability of their HR Management Systems, usually through a combination of standard reports and tools for custom analysis. In some cases, vendors also offer more sophisticated business intelligence tools, which go beyond standard HR reports to provide drill-down analysis of costs, causes and trends. Generic business intelligence tools evolved out of the finance function and were traditionally numbers-driven – and that meant they weren’t always easy for business managers to deploy. But as we outline in Part Two, recent generations of people-related analytical software have placed much more focus on usability within the HR function and lines of business.
